The Alchemist’s Dragon Ex Libris
rough sketch and value
study
To Be: 18x24, oil on panel
This is a commission for a friend that’s kinda into books. The rules were
“do whatever you want just not too scary.”
I’ve been dying to paint a dragon. I figured if I pulled back and made
the piece more about the landscape it would take some of the sting away from the
beast.
The story i came up with is, this young alchemist girl turns a library of
books into a living dragon to prevent them from being burned.
Above we have our armor clad alchemist rearing on her large stag playing
with her dragon on a lake shore.
I’m doing concept art of the alchemist and I’ll be giving away renderings to
anyone that comes up with the best name for her.
If you’ve got one for
her now fire one off for a chance a free drawing

æledfýr. It means flame of fire in Old English. Also, I’m tempted to write a short prose piece over the painting. Is that okay?

Monica! That character iS ME. I’d so turn books into a dragon to save them. I love books and I love dragons! So I read that and thought “ME!”
